Salt can also help your pain when combined with pepper and a small amount of water to form a paste. This paste can be applied to the affected area.
2. At Home Remedies for Tooth Pain
There are some unconventional at home methods that can be used to treat a toothache. Most of these, ironically, involve food items!
Garlic, clove, and onion can all be used in different ways to help alleviate your pain and treat a possible infection. Garlic and onion can be chewed on or placed directly on the tooth. Cloves can be mixed with oil and applied to the area as well. They offer a combination of antibiotic and anti-inflammatory benefits.
Black tea bags can also be used to treat tooth pain. If you wet a black tea bag and place it between your gums and the affected tooth, it may actually help reduce pain and any bleeding.
3. Over the Counter Medication
This is a pretty common way to address any type of pain you’re experiencing. If you need quick relief you can take the recommended dose of Advil, Motrin, Tylenol or Aleve to help reduce pain.
Just beware that aspirin can actually increase bleeding and interfere with the healing process. Other medications you can apply to the area include Ambesol or Sensodyne toothpaste.
4. Keep the Area Clear
It’s important to keep the affected area free of food debris. Once you locate the tooth causing you pain, carefully use floss to remove any food that might be stuck in the tooth.
Once the area is clear you can use either ice or a heat pack near the area to offer some added comfort. Just be careful not to place anything that is extremely hot or cold directly on your tooth.
5. Things to Avoid
When you’re suffering from severe tooth pain you definitely want to avoid any food or drink that is too hot or too cold. Extreme temperatures can be very painful if the dental layer of the tooth is exposed.
You should also avoid foods or beverages that are acidic or high in sugar, which can irritate the nerve in your tooth.
Persistent tooth pain can be an indication of a more serious condition and an X-Ray might be needed to diagnose the problem. You can use the above suggestions to help treat the pain, but you should be seen and diagnosed by a professional that can offer you a long-term treatment plan.
